Safety Concerns Addressed for Students Crossing Mmabatho Railway Line
Mmabatho residents, particularly students, are feeling safer thanks to a collaborative effort between the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and local stakeholders. The partnership focuses on improving safety along the railway line connecting Unit 3 and local shopping complexes.
The Department is spearheading a “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” initiative. This involves making physical changes to the area to deter crime and create a more secure environment for those travelling through.
Community members have praised the initiative, noting increased police visibility and improved lighting. Students, who frequently use the railway line to access shops and educational resources, say they feel more secure walking the route, especially during darker hours.
“It makes a real difference knowing that someone is looking out for our safety,” said one student from a local college. “Before, you always had to be aware of your surroundings, but now, there’s a feeling of security.”
The Department hopes the project will serve as a model for similar initiatives in other areas. You can read more about this initiative by visiting Arrive Alive. For other news around the City of Thohoyandou, visit the City of Thohoyandou News page.
